We have been learning about the Jewish festival of Hanukkah. We found out how children and families celebrate and what they do to prepare. We talked about similarities and differences between Hanukkah and other celebrations that we have learned about this half-term. We looked at and learned the names of important objects and symbols relating to Hanukkah such as the Star of David and the Menorah. The children we excited to see and hold a real menorah and they produced some fantastic menorah paintings for a display.

In Maths we practiced counting using flames on a menorah candle and counting out jewels to decorate a star. We compared amounts using the words ‘more’, ‘fewer’ and ‘the same.’

We looked at non-fiction books about Hanukkah and talked about the text and pictures whilst learning about the festival. They were very good at repeating and remembering the new words they heard, including ‘synagogue,’ ‘dreidel’ and ‘latkes.’ They were also able to recall lots of facts about Hanukkah and how it is celebrated.

We have continued our preparations for the Christmas Extravaganza, which promises to be a great show! The singing has been fantastic and it has been wonderful to see the children enjoying performing and growing in confidence each time we go into the hall. They have done brilliantly!
